The following information applies to all students interested in a degree with a music major:
ENTRANCE AUDITION - Each student must pass an entrance audition before initial enrollment in the program. The student must select and perform from memory two selections of music of contrasting style.
PROFICIENCY PLACEMENT EXAMS - Students must successfully complete proficiency exams administered by the department. Students having deficiencies will be required to do remedial work. Credit is not awarded for these proficiency exams. Students may be exempt from certain requirements upon successful completion of the exams.
The graduate who completes this program will:
1. Have developed a well-defined philosophy of music based on Biblical principles.
2. Understand the place and importance of music in local church worship and ministry.
3. Have the skills necessary to supervise the musical program and worship service of
a local church – including minimal competency in at least two areas of applied music useful for church ministries.
4. Understand the multiple mediums available for worship and the expression of Christian
faith.
5. Be equipped to develop a well-rounded music and/or worship training program in a local
church.
6. Have the Biblical training to provide additional service to the church in its various
ministries.
1. The core curriculum:
Bible: delete Bible/Theology elective hours (12) and add BIB 3205, 3206.
General Courses: delete SPH 1301 and 2 hours or physical education
Church Ministries: delete CM 3307 and add CM 2310
2. Music requirement: 31 hours distributed between applied and theory courses
a. Applied: 4 hours: piano or guitar, 6 hours: MUA 1100 or 1110 in any combination, MUA 1205, 1206, 2203, 2204
b. Theory: MUT 2213, 2214, 2301, 2302, 2303
3. Worship requirement: WOR 1301, 1302, 2301, 3201, 3202, 4301, 4601
4. Ten (10) hours of General Electives
5. Minimum requirement: 128 semester hours
6. Christian character expected of a music minister
7. Fulfillment of all requirements in the Christian Service Program
Additional Requirements for the Music Education Degree
COMPREHENSIVE EXIT BARRIER - To assure that the student is integrating course work in a correct manner, comprehensive exams will be administered orally in the junior and senior years. The exams will cover the areas of music history, theory, sight singing and ear training, conducting, and secondary piano. They are designed as additional preparation for the all-level music exam needed for certification.
RECITALS - A junior recital, MUA 3000, is performed by music students who have completed the 2000 level applied courses. All music students are required to attend departmental recitals.
JURIES - Students are tested on their applied proficiency in upper level courses during final exam week by a jury composed of music faculty members.
ACCOMPANYING AND SONG LEADING - Capable keyboard students may be required to accompany performances or other functions at the discretion of the department, or they may be asked to supervise beginning keyboard instruction. Students may be required to lead congregational singing in Chapel or another departmentally approved function.
Students interested in the application of music as ministry upon graduation from Bible college will benefit from the Bible and Music Ministries Program. This program leads to the Bachelor of Science Degree.
