MUT 0350

FOUNDATIONS OF MUSIC THEORY 3 CREDIT HOURS

A foundational theory course which includes a study of notation, forms of rhythm, keys, scales, intervals, and triads. Particular emphasis is placed upon keyboard realization.

 

MUT 1215 REMEDIAL SIGHT SINGING AND EAR TRAINING 2 CREDIT HOURS

This course is an introduction to sight singing using movable Do system. Ear training includes simple melodic, harmonic, and rhythmic dictation. (No degree credit).

 

MUT 2213 SIGHT SINGING AND EAR TRAINING I 2 CREDIT HOURS

This sequence of courses introduces the student to sight singing using the tonic sol­fasolamization system. Ear training includes simple melodic, harmonic, and rhythmic dictation. Exercises progress to a level of moderate difficulty. Prerequisite: Proficiency exam or equivalent.

 

MUT 2214 SIGHT SINGING AND EAR TRAINING II 2 CREDIT HOURS

Continues MUT 2213 with increasingly difficult exercises. Prerequisite: MUT 2213.

 

MUT 3213 SIGHT SINGING AND EAR TRAINING III 2 CREDIT HOURS

Modulation, modal melodies and mixed meters are included in the sight singing exercises. Ear training includes chromaticism, modulation, seventh chord, compound and mixed meters. Prerequisite: MUT 2214.

 

MUT 3214 SIGHT SINGING AND EAR TRAINING IV 2 CREDIT HOURS

The content of MUT 3213 is expanded and built upon. Prerequisite: MUT 3213.

 

MUT 2301 MUSIC THEORY I 3 CREDIT HOURS

An introduction to 18th century harmony with practical experience in analysis, part-writing, and keyboard realization is given. The study includes primary and secondary triads, non-harmonic tones, triads in inversions, principles of chord progressions, seventh chords, secondary dominant chords and elementary modulation.
Prerequisite: Proficiency exam or equivalent.

 

MUT 2302 MUSIC THEORY II 3 CREDIT HOURS

Continues MUT 2301. Prerequisite: MUT 2301.

 

MUT 3301 MUSIC THEORY III 3 CREDIT HOURS

This course includes part-writing of figured bass exercises, melody harmonization and harmonic analysis requiring all diatonic seventh chords, secondary dominant chord modulation, altered chords, 9th, 11th, and 13th chords. Prerequisite: MUT2302 or equivalent.

MUT 3302 MUSIC THEORY IV 3 CREDIT HOURS

This course expands and builds on the material in MUT 3301. Prerequisite: MUT 3301.

 

MUT 3211 CHORAL ARRANGING 2 CREDIT HOURS

The student will gain experience in arranging for unison, two, three, four, and multi-part chorus with instrumental accompaniments. Prerequisite: MUT 2302.
